Can Alcoholism Be Healed?

Any number of high cost personal health clinics would like to provide a positive response to this question, but the conventional wisdom of groups such since Alcoholics Anonymous is that alcoholism may never be healed, but merely controlled.

Obviously nobody would deny that a lot of the physical issues related to excessive alcohol intake can be healed, although a few are more easily treated than others. The liver can regenerate. Long-term injury to the brain and neural network is less responsive to medical treatment. Even then, however, nobody would want to underestimate the advantages of appropriate medical care being given to the most chronic of disorders.

Likewise medical science may play an extremely significant role in helping an alcohol addicted individual get throughout the period of detoxification that's the obligatory initial step towards bodily health.

While some helping practitioners nevertheless insist upon the use of sedatives and painkillers during the detoxification process, few who've seen an individual suffering from delirium as a consequence of alcohol discontinuation would not sympathize with the worthiness of detox medicine of some type.

The question is whether or not the disease itself may ever be healed.

The standard wisdom of Alcoholics Anonymous and its sister organizations are echoing that such ailments can never be healed, since the disease is just ever symptomatic of an addictive temperament, which the character problem is embedded in the addicted individual's genetics.

Participants in AA meetings always start their time of sharing by introducing themselves by name and then announcing, I am an alcoholic. They'll do that even when they've not touched that a drop of alcohol in 50 years, since the self understanding is they're now only non drinking alcoholics who're nonetheless just ever one drink away from returning to that a life that's entirely controlled by destructive drinking!

Such a viewpoint can help to make AA members humble and non judgemental, since they never see themselves since rising above their sisters and brothers whose lives are still being destroyed by their alcohol addiction.

Such an investigation though also unavoidably minimalises the significance of any non genetic factors leading to alcoholism, which, it might be argued, might inhibit the recovery process.

An individual who drinks alcohol on a regular basis and too always has a history related to their drinking problem. While in several cases it might just be that a bad habit picked up throughout the party days of their youth, in that a large variety of cases the drinking problem has arisen in reaction to an experience of severe personal tragedy, like family breakdown, the death of that a son or daughter, or any other unbearable crisis which has led the individual to drink in order to numb the pain.
